The Cactus Garden is a magnificent example of an integrated architectural intervention into the landscape. César Manrique created this audacious architectonic complex whilst maintaining the unshakeable pairing of art and nature that is so tangible in all of his spatial interventions.
It is located at the town of Guatiza, municipality of Teguise, in an agricultural environment characterized by extensive plantations of cactus dedicated to the cultivation of the "cochineal".

In the "palas" of the cactus (also known as prickly pears) grown a parasitic insect called cochineal (Coccus cacti), a parasitic insect from which is obtained an intense colouring carmine after a careful process of manufacture. Traditionally used as textile dyeing, now this natural dye is highly valued in food and cosmetics industries. Despite in La Vega de Guatiza we find the largest area of cochineal cultivation in the Canary Islands, it is a culture in decline due to the competition of industrial synthetic dyes.
There is no result for this search parameters in the area of the Canary Islands.
