San Bartolomé
After Arrecife, this is the island's smallest municipality. It is situated in the centre, and has the island's airport. Although its coastal strip is shorter than that of the other municipalities, this has not prevented it from developing one of Lanzarote's largest residential zones around Playa Honda.
Along with the municipality of Tías, San Bartolomé takes in part of the Valle de la Geria, and has clear links with agriculture and the cultivation of products as typical to the island as sweet potatoes.
The island's links withe the land led César Manrique to pay homage to the laborious work of the island's farmers with his Monumento al Campesino - Monument to the Farmer - which, along with the Museum, shows us the community's special form of agriculture with its traditional rustic utensils and equipment, still in use today.
As for the town of San Bartolomé itself, a visit to Casa Ajei is recommended, as is a visit to the local chruch, which has architectural details of great cultural value. Other zones of solidified lava can be visited, as can the Islote, extensive areas of vines which alternate with fig trees, cellars and farmhouses forming a contrast against the great dark background of the entire Geria valley.
